Pesticide Exposure and Early Menopause
Fauzi Muh presented an eye-opening study at the recent 14th World Menopause Congress in May this year, in Mexico. Mr Muh presented a study concerning the association between pesticide exposure and the increasing incidence of early menopause in women farmers from the Brebes district of Indonesia.
This is a summary of his presentation:
Background : Brebes is the largest user of pesticides in Indonesia, making it have potential for a high occurence of pesticide poisoning. Pesticide exposure has been associated with reproductive health disturbances. Some pesticides like parathion and methyl parathion are structurally similar with estrogen and may interact with hormone receptors. It can cause alterations to a female’s hormonal balance, and direct female gamete damage. Early menopause can be associated with ovarian follicular atresia. Pesticide can cause an increase in the nu number of ovarian follicular atresia.
Objectives : To prove association between pesticide exposure with early menopause in female farmers who are regularly exposed to pesticide.
Methods : Observational research using cross sectional design. We need to recruit as many women as possible aged between 30-45 in each subdistrict in Brebes District. Each female will be have their estrogen and progesterone blood levels measured.
Results :Variables in this study include duration of being a farmer, duration of working, intensity of spraying and personal protective equipment used . We also need to measure estrogen and progesterone levels in blood serum to see the association between each of these
variables. using statistical analyses.
