Turner's Syndrome

A chromosomal disorder in which all or part of one of the one sex chromosomes is absent - female chromosomal status 45, X rather than 46 XX.

Also known as Ullrich-Turner syndrome, Gonadal dysgenesis, monosomy X, Bonnevie-Ullrich syndrome.

About the Condition

1 in every 2500 girls.

Chromosomal disorder of unknown origin.

Symptoms of Turner's Syndrome

Suspect Turner’s syndrome if your daughter has this appearance:

Physical abnormalities:

  • Short stature (20cm shorter than her peers)
  • Broad chest
  • Low hairline, low-set ears, wide-spaced eyes, dry eyes, droopy eyelids and webbed necks.
  • No pubic or underarm hair or breast development.

Reproductive abnormalities:

  • No periods
  • Amenorrhea
  • Sterility

Concurrent health problems:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Vision problems
  • Hearing concerns
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Dental problems (excessive cavities and plaque)
  • May only have one kidney
  • Heart problems (bicuspid valve and aorta)

Cognitive disorders:

  • Difficulties in visuospatial, mathematical, and memory areas.

Progression

Most pregnancies do not survive to full-term. For Turner girls reduced life - expectancy due to CV disorders by 13 years. Physical and cognitive problems do not progress.

Causes of Turner's Syndrome

Turner's Syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality affecting only girls, where one X chromosome is missing. Turner’s syndrome is responsible for 20% of all miscarriages that occur in the first trimester, and 98% of pregnancies affected by Turner’s syndrome end in miscarriage.

Diagnosis

Tests: Amniocentesis during pregnancy. Karyotype determination.

In utero diagnosis is via amniocentesis - confirmation via genetic karyotyping.

Secondary Consideration: Cardiovascular considerations, osteoporosis and skeletal concerns, cognitive disorders.

Treatment and Management of Turner's Syndrome

Turner's Syndrome is a genetic disorder and has no cure. Hormone replacement therapy can be used to control the symptoms that result from this condition, especially to prevent bone fractures that often occur in Turner’s syndrome women.
